Join together with Temple Israel of Greater Miami and Church of the Open Door UCC for an interfaith commemoration to honor the memory and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in song, teachings and interfaith worship.

On Friday, Jan. 17, Temple Israel’s 6:30 p.m. “Service of the Heart,” led by Rabbi Tom Heyn, will feature baritone Lloyd Reshard, Jr., who will perform a number of gospel selections for the occasion. Reshard has been a featured soloist throughout South Florida, including appearances with the MasterWorks Chorale of West Palm Beach and Naples Opera Guild. He also has sung at Temple Israel’s High Holy Day services the past two years.

Following the 45-minute musical service, the temple will hold its 7:30 p.m. Shabbat Evening Service with Rabbi Heyn and Musical Director Alan Mason. The congregation will welcome the Rev. Dr. R. Joaquin Willis, Senior Pastor of Church of the Open Door, who will address the congregation. During the service, special music will be performed by Reshard, joined by the Temple Israel Singers. An Oneg dessert reception follows. Families are welcome; free childcare is available.

Then, on Sunday, Jan. 19, Rabbi Heyn will be guest speaker at Church of the Open Door services at 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.

The community is invited to all services at both houses of worship.

Temple Israel is located at 137 NE 19 St., downtown Miami. Free self-parking is available in the temple lot.

Church of the Open Door is at 6001 NW 8th Ave. in Liberty City.
